Will Shipley broke out for Clemson in 2022 with 1424 total yards and 15 touchdowns. On a mediocre Tigers squad in 2023, Shipley regressed - putting up only 1071 total yards and 7 touchdowns on worse efficiency. I only had access to one game of film on him, so we'll make this one quick as it can't be a full review.
I like Shipley as a pass catcher. Everything I've seen shows him running plenty of routes out of backfield and he has pretty natural hands. This pairs well with his harder running style. He seeks out contact down the field and I saw him break off a couple big runs after running through contact. His play strength is pretty good. I like how freezes linebackers by pressing one gap before taking another.
What I really don't like about Shipley's game is how he navigates the o-line. Maybe it's an optical illusion, but it really looks like he gets stuck to the back of his o line. He looks stuck in mud when he tries to make a quick lateral move out of that position. He wasn't super efficient as far as college running backs go which I do worry about a bit. He does not look explosive running through holes which makes his stuck-in-mud issue worse. Dollar Tree Christian McCaffrey.
